# Federal student aid beyond Pell (FSEOG grants, Federal Work-Study and Direct Subsidized Loans from the same FAFSA): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

*The FAFSA that opens the Pell Grant also opens three more federal programs: the FSEOG grant ($100 to $4,000 a year), Federal Work-Study jobs, and Direct Subsidized Loans whose interest the government pays while the student is in school. FSEOG and Work-Study are limited funds handed out by each school, so the school's own deadline matters. Apply by filing the FAFSA at StudentAid.gov.*

## What federal student aid beyond Pell is, in one paragraph

The FAFSA is one application for several federal programs. Besides the Pell Grant it opens the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), a grant for undergraduates with exceptional need; Federal Work-Study, a part-time job paid at least the federal minimum wage; and Direct Subsidized Loans, on which the government pays the interest while the student is in school at least half-time. FSEOG and Work-Study are campus-based: each school gets a fixed amount each year and hands it out until it runs out, so filing early and meeting the school's own deadline decide who gets them.

```
## Who may qualify
**FSEOG**: undergraduates with exceptional financial need at a participating school (rule:fseog_who). **Work-Study**: undergraduate, graduate and professional students with financial need, full-time or part-time (rule:fws_who). **Direct Subsidized Loans**: undergraduates with financial need; the loan may not exceed the need (rule:sub_who). All three follow the basic federal aid rules (rule:basic_eligibility) and the need formula: cost of attendance minus the Student Aid Index (rule:need_formula).
Loan limits for undergraduates, unchanged after 1 July 2026 (rule:annual_limits_dependent, rule:annual_limits_independent, rule:aggregate_limits):
| Year | Dependent: total (subsidized max) | Independent: total (subsidized max) |
|---|---|---|
| First year | $5,500 ($3,500) | $9,500 ($3,500) |
| Second year | $6,500 ($4,500) | $10,500 ($4,500) |
| Third year and beyond | $7,500 ($5,500) | $12,500 ($5,500) |
| Aggregate | $31,000 ($23,000) | $57,500 ($23,000) |
| Item | Value | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| FSEOG per year | $100 to $4,000 | rule:fseog_amount |
| Undergraduate loan rate, 1 Jul 2026 to 30 Jun 2027 | 6.52% fixed | rule:rate_2026_27 |
| Loan fee | 1.057% | rule:loan_fee |
| Grace period | 6 months | rule:grace_period |
| Repayment | 10 to 30 years | rule:repayment_term |
Direct PLUS Loans for graduate borrowers are no longer available (rule:grad_plus_ended).
## What the model on this page can do for you
This article is also the context of a model you can text or chat with. The buttons under the title open Messages with a note already written, or a chat on this page. The model has read this exact page: the rules above with their source ids, the procedure below, and the other programs the same facts open. It asks for one or two facts at a time, starting with your enrollment level and whether you are a dependent or independent student, tells you which rules you pass and which it cannot decide, names the programs you may also qualify for, and gives the exact next step. It has no tools: it cannot apply for you, and it says so. Every message is kept on this build's Ledger.
A screening here is a screening, not a decision. Your school's financial aid office decides.
## How to apply, and what happens after
File the **[FAFSA](https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa)**. The school builds an aid offer from it. Campus-based funds go first-come, so the school's own deadline matters (rule:campus_deadlines).
| Stage | What happens | Who acts | What loses people the aid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apply | FAFSA, every year (rule:annual_fafsa) | Student and contributors | Filing after the school's campus-based deadline |
| Offer | FSEOG, Work-Study and loans appear in the aid offer | Financial aid office | Funds already spent (rule:fseog_funds_limited) |
| Accept a loan | Entrance counseling and a Master Promissory Note (rule:accept_loan) | Student | Accepting more than needed; a loan can be cancelled before disbursement (rule:cancel_loan) |
| Work | A work-study job, paid at least monthly, capped at the award (rule:fws_pay, rule:fws_cap) | Student and employer | Not finding a job before the term |
| After school | Six-month grace period, then repayment (rule:grace_period) | Loan servicer | Not knowing the servicer |
## The same facts open other programs
- [[california-pell-grant]] (B055): the same FAFSA; Pell is paid to every eligible student.
- [[california-cal-grant]] (B056): California's grant from the same FAFSA.
- [[california-college-promise-grant]] (B057): the community college fee waiver.
- [[california-extended-foster-care-chafee]] (B061): Chafee grants for current and former foster youth.
- [[california-free-tax-preparation]] (B054): the FAFSA reads federal tax data.
Those connections are not written here by hand. They are read from [[california-benefits-graph|the California benefits graph]], the object that holds all 80 programs, the life events that trigger them and the facts they share. A model screening you for FSEOG, Work-Study and subsidized loans sees the same edges.
## How this page works
This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-federal-student-aid-beyond-pell.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-federal-student-aid-beyond-pell.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` carry the article's identity and jurisdiction, the procedure with its stages, every rule with its source id and verification status, the fields with their canonical fact names, the ontology edges into the benefits graph, the declared actions, the model's instructions, and the permissions the model has (none). The model's context is served separately at [/a/california-federal-student-aid-beyond-pell/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-federal-student-aid-beyond-pell/context): the same object, projected for a model, so there is one source of truth for the reader and the machine.
What is saved: a thread per phone number that texts, holding which articles it asked about, how many messages, and the facts it stated, so a person who comes back continues rather than restarts. Every message, in either direction, is a row on this build's Ledger.
Figures carry their status in `facts.rules[].status`. Every figure on this page was read from the official pages listed under Official addresses on 9 October 2026. StudentAid.gov draws its pages in the browser from a JSON copy at the same address with `.json` added; this article cites those JSON copies because they hold the exact words. A value no official page states is written UNKNOWN.
