# Moving to another county or state in California: what to do first, deadlines, documents, and which benefits open

*A move changes which county or state runs a household's benefits. CalFresh cannot be received in two places in the same month, neither CalFresh nor Medi-Cal may require a period of residence before benefits, and a Housing Choice Voucher can move outside the housing authority's area if the family notifies the housing authority and the owner before moving. This page lists the rule for each program and what to do first.*

## What happens when a household moves to another county or state

The place a household lives decides who runs its benefits. SNAP cannot be received in more than one household or project area in a month (s_lii_7cfr273_3_one), and no state may make a new arrival wait to qualify (s_lii_7cfr273_3_durational). Medicaid follows the state where the person lives and intends to reside, with no waiting period (s_lii_42cfr435_403_intends, s_lii_42cfr435_403_nodur). A Housing Choice Voucher can move with the family under portability (s_lii_24cfr982_353_port), but only after the family notifies the housing authority and the owner before moving out (s_lii_24cfr982_354_notice).

## Deadlines that cost money or coverage when missed

Each line is the agency's own rule, with the source id it was read from on 9 October 2026.

| Program | Rule | Days | Counted from | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B035 | Notify the housing authority and the owner before moving from the old unit | not stated as a number | the move-out date | s_lii_24cfr982_354_notice |
| B001 | No individual may take part in SNAP in more than one household or more than one project area in any month | not stated as a number | the calendar month | s_lii_7cfr273_3_one |
| B001 | A new CalFresh or SNAP application is decided no later than 30 calendar days after it is filed | 30 | the date the application was filed | s_lii_7cfr273_2_30 |

## Documents to gather

Only documents an official page names are listed.

- Proof of residency at the new address (B001; s_lii_7cfr273_2_residency)
- The written notice to the housing authority naming the area you want to move to (B035; s_lii_24cfr982_354_notice)

## Programs this event opens

- [[california-calfresh]] (B001): A household applies where it lives; no one may take part in more than one household or project area in a month, and the state may not impose any durational residency requirement. (s_lii_7cfr273_3_durational)
- [[california-medi-cal]] (B011): The state of Medicaid residence is where the person lives and intends to reside, including without a fixed address, or entered with a job commitment or seeking work; Medicaid cannot be denied because a person has not lived in the state for a set period. (s_lii_42cfr435_403_nodur)
- [[california-housing-choice-voucher]] (B035): Under portability a voucher family has the right to receive voucher assistance outside the initial housing authority's jurisdiction, subject to HUD rules. (s_lii_24cfr982_353_port)

## How this page works

This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-life-event-moving-across-counties-states.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-life-event-moving-across-counties-states.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` hold the event, the first actions in order with each agency's deadline, the deadlines, the documents, the programs the event opens with the rule that opens each, and the canonical facts to collect. Every deadline and every eligibility line carries a source id; each source carries the exact words copied from the official page on 9 October 2026. A value no official page states is written UNKNOWN. The model's context is served at [/a/california-life-event-moving-across-counties-states/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-life-event-moving-across-counties-states/context). The model has no tools and submits nothing to any agency; the agency decides. The programs and the event come from [[california-benefits-graph|the California benefits graph]]. The graph row for this event lists no triggered programs; B001, B011 and B035 are named here because the official rules describe what a move does to each.
