# Filing taxes on a low income in California: what to do first, deadlines, documents, and which benefits open

*A low-income California household can file for free through VITA or CalFile and claim refundable credits: the federal EITC up to $8,046, the Child Tax Credit up to $2,200 per child, CalEITC up to $3,756 and the Young Child Tax Credit up to $1,189, all for tax year 2025. This page lists who qualifies for each, the forms, and the dates the official pages state.*

## What happens when a low-income household files taxes

Several credits pay cash even when no tax is owed, and only a filed return claims them. For tax year 2025 the federal EITC reaches $8,046 with three or more children (s_irs_eitc_max), the Child Tax Credit is up to $2,200 per child with up to $1,700 refundable (s_irs_ctc_amount), CalEITC is up to $3,756 for earnings up to $32,900 (s_ftb_caleitc), and the Young Child Tax Credit adds up to $1,189 for a child under 6 (s_ftb_yctc_amount). VITA prepares returns for free for people who generally make about $70,244 or less (s_irs_vita_income), and CalFile files the state return for free (s_ftb_calfile_free).

## How this page works

This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-life-event-tax-season-with-low-income.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-life-event-tax-season-with-low-income.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` hold the event, the first actions in order with each agency's deadline, the deadlines, the documents, the programs the event opens with the rule that opens each, and the canonical facts to collect. Every deadline and every eligibility line carries a source id; each source carries the exact words copied from the official page on 9 October 2026. A value no official page states is written UNKNOWN. The model's context is served at [/a/california-life-event-tax-season-with-low-income/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-life-event-tax-season-with-low-income/context). The model has no tools and submits nothing to any agency; the agency decides. The programs and the event come from [[california-benefits-graph|the California benefits graph]]. The graph row for this event lists no triggered programs; B049, B050, B052, B053 and B054 are named here because the official pages describe them.
