# State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Paid Family Leave (California partial wage replacement for illness, pregnancy and family care): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

*State Disability Insurance pays California workers part of their wages while they cannot work because of a non-work illness, injury or pregnancy (up to 52 weeks), and Paid Family Leave pays while they care for a seriously ill family member or bond with a new child (up to 8 weeks). Benefits run $50 to $1,765 a week. Apply to EDD through SDI Online or by mail.*

## What State Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave is, in one paragraph

State Disability Insurance is a California payroll-funded program, run by the Employment Development Department, that replaces part of a worker's wages when they need time off work. It has two parts. Disability Insurance (DI) pays when the worker cannot do their regular work because of their own non-work illness, injury, pregnancy or childbirth. Paid Family Leave (PFL) pays when the worker needs time off to care for a seriously ill family member, to bond with a new child, or for a family member's military deployment abroad. Most W-2 workers pay in through the CASDI line on their paystub. Citizenship and immigration status do not matter.

}
```
## Who may qualify
**DI** needs all of these (rule:di_eligibility): unable to do your regular work for at least eight days (rule:di_eight_days), lost wages, working or looking for work when it began, under the care of a licensed health professional in the first eight days (rule:di_under_care), and at least $300 of SDI-taxed wages in the base period (rule:base_period_300).
**PFL** needs: unable to do your regular work because you are caring for a seriously ill family member, bonding with a new child, or supporting a family member's military deployment abroad; working or looking for work when leave starts; and the same $300 of SDI-taxed wages.
The weekly amount comes from the quarter of the base period with the highest wages (rule:weekly_benefit_table):
| Highest quarter wages | Weekly benefit |
| --- | --- |
| Less than $300 | not eligible |
| $300 to $722.49 | $50 |
| $722.50 to $16,279.90 | 90% of weekly wages |
| $16,279.91 to $20,931.30 | $1,127 |
| $20,931.31 or more | 70% of weekly wages, up to $1,765 |
DI pays for up to 52 weeks (rule:di_52_weeks). PFL pays for up to 8 weeks in a 12-month period (rule:pfl_8_weeks) and does not protect the job (rule:pfl_no_job_protection).
## What the model on this page can do for you
This article is also the context of a model you can text or chat with. The buttons under the title open Messages with a note already written, or a chat on this page. The model has read this exact page: the rules above with their source ids, the procedure below, and the other programs the same facts open. It asks for one or two facts at a time, starting with whether it is your own illness or injury or a family member's care or a new child, and the date it started, tells you which rules you pass and which it cannot decide, names the programs you may also qualify for, and gives the exact next step. It has no tools: it cannot apply for you, and it says so. Every message is kept on this build's Ledger.
A screening here is a screening, not a decision. EDD decides.
## How to apply, and what happens after
File through **[myEDD and SDI Online](https://myedd.edd.ca.gov)** or by mail on the paper claim form.
**DI**: file the Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits (DE 2501) no earlier than nine days and no later than 49 days after the disability begins, and have your licensed health professional submit the medical certification within the same 49 days (rule:di_file_window).
**PFL**: file the Claim for Paid Family Leave Benefits (DE 2501F) from the first day of leave to 41 days after it starts (rule:pfl_file_window), with proof of relationship for bonding or the care recipient's medical certificate for care (rule:pfl_documents). Bonding must be used within 12 months of the birth or placement (rule:pfl_bonding_12_months). A mother on a pregnancy DI claim is sent the bonding form (DE 2501FP) automatically.
EDD decides a completed claim in up to 14 days (rule:decision_14_days). DI has an unpaid seven-day waiting period (rule:di_waiting_7_days). To keep DI paid, return the DE 2593 sent after 10 weeks of automatic payment (rule:di_continuing_cert) or the DE 2500A sent every two weeks (rule:di_biweekly_cert). A denial can be appealed within 30 days of the notice date (rule:appeal_30_days).
## The same facts open other programs
The fact SDI asks first, the worker's employment status, is also asked by the programs below, and a pregnancy, a new child or an injury opens several of them at once:
- **Unemployment Insurance (UI) (B027)**, [[california-unemployment-insurance]]: EDD's weekly benefit for job loss; SDI is for a worker who cannot work because of illness, injury, pregnancy or family care.
- **Workers' compensation (temporary disability) (B072)**, [[california-workers-comp-temporary-disability]]: a work injury goes to workers' compensation first; EDD tells injured workers to file SDI too.
- **WIC (Women, Infants & Children) (B003)**, [[california-wic]]: food for pregnant women, new mothers and children under five; same pregnancy and new-baby facts.
- **Medi-Cal (Medicaid) (B011)**, [[california-medi-cal]]: health coverage; a drop in income can change Medi-Cal eligibility.
- **CalFresh (SNAP) (B001)**, [[california-calfresh]]: food benefits; SDI payments count as income.
- **Subsidized child care: CalWORKs Stages 1-3 + Alternative Payment (CAPP) (B060)**, [[california-subsidized-child-care]]: child care, for parents returning to work after bonding leave.
- **SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) (B025)**, [[california-ssdi]]: federal disability insurance for a condition expected to last a year or more; SDI ends at 52 weeks.
- **SSI + California SSP (B023)**, [[california-ssi-ssp]]: federal cash for disabled people with very low income and resources.
## How this page works
This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-sdi-paid-family-leave.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-sdi-paid-family-leave.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` carry the article's identity and jurisdiction, the procedure with its stages, every rule with its source id and verification status, the person's fields with their canonical fact names, the ontology edges into the benefits graph, the declared actions, the model's instructions, and the permissions the model has (none). The model's context is served separately at [/a/california-sdi-paid-family-leave/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-sdi-paid-family-leave/context): the same object, projected for a model, so there is one source of truth for the reader and the machine.
What is saved: a thread per phone number that texts, holding which articles it asked about, how many messages, and the facts it stated, so a person who comes back continues rather than restarts. The same phone number is treated as the same thread; a browser is never shown another phone's thread, and signing in is required before anything private crosses from text to screen. Every message, in either direction, is a row on this build's Ledger, as every action here is.
Figures carry their status in `facts.rules[].status`. The weekly amount table, the 52- and 8-week limits, the filing windows and the appeal deadline were fetched from EDD pages and verified on 9 October 2026.
Use only the rules in this article's facts.rules, naming the rule id and its source id beside every figure; the weekly amounts are from EDD's table for claims beginning on or after 1 January 2026 (rule:weekly_benefit_table). First establish which part applies: the worker's own illness, injury or pregnancy (DI) or caring for or bonding with a family member (PFL); send a work injury to workers' compensation as well. Ask for at most two facts at a time, starting with the claim type and the start date, then the highest quarter's SDI-taxed wages; restate each as a canonical fact line (benefits.claim.type = PFL bonding). Report results as: potentially eligible, potentially ineligible, insufficient information, or requires EDD determination; always say EDD decides. Give filing windows from facts.rules: DI 9 to 49 days, PFL within 41 days, appeal within 30 days. Use facts.ontology.related_programs to name other programs, and facts.procedure.stages for the exact next step. Never claim a claim was filed. Keep it short.",
