# Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI, monthly federal payments for workers who cannot work because of a disability): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

*Social Security Disability Insurance pays monthly to people who have worked enough years and have a disability expected to last a year or more, with Medicare after 2 years of benefits. The amount depends on lifetime earnings, not on income or assets. Apply to the Social Security Administration online or by phone.*

## What Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is, in one paragraph

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is the federal insurance workers pay for through Social Security taxes. It pays a monthly benefit to a person who has worked long enough and has a physical or mental condition expected to keep them from substantial work for at least a year or to end in death. The amount is based on lifetime average earnings, not on current income or savings. Payments begin after a 5-month waiting period, and Medicare follows after 2 years of benefits. Family members may also be paid. The Social Security Administration decides, with medical decisions made by the state Disability Determination Services.

```widget
{
  "type": "stat",
  "value": "$1,690 a month",
  "label": "the 2026 substantial gainful activity limit for non-blind applicants who keep working ($2,830 if blind) (SSA, rule:sga_2026)"
}
```

## Who may qualify

All of these (rule:disability, rule:work_history): a condition that affects the ability to work for a year or more or will result in death; generally work in at least 5 of the last 10 years (less under age 24); and earnings no higher than SGA if still working (rule:sga_2026).

| Figure | Value | Rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SGA, non-blind, 2026 | $1,690 a month | rule:sga_2026 |
| SGA, statutorily blind, 2026 | $2,830 a month | rule:sga_2026 |
| Work history | generally 5 of the last 10 years | rule:work_history |
| Waiting period | 5 full calendar months (none for ALS) | rule:waiting_5_months |
| Medicare starts | after 2 years of benefits | rule:medicare_2_years |

There is no income or asset test (rule:not_means_tested). Workers' compensation and some public disability payments can reduce SSDI (rule:offset).

## What the model on this page can do for you

This article is also the context of a model you can text or chat with. The buttons under the title open Messages with a note already written, or a chat on this page. The model has read this exact page: the rules above with their source ids, the procedure below, and the other programs the same facts open. It asks for one or two facts at a time, starting with your condition and how long it is expected to last, and what you earn from work now, tells you which rules you pass and which it cannot decide, names the programs you may also qualify for, and gives the exact next step. It has no tools: it cannot apply for you, and it says so. Every message is kept on this build's Ledger.

A screening here is a screening, not a decision. SSA decides.

## How to apply, and what happens after

Apply to the Social Security Administration **[online](https://www.ssa.gov/apply)** or by phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (rule:apply_where). Have your medical sources, treatment dates and work history ready.

The state Disability Determination Services reviews the medical evidence and may schedule an exam. If approved, benefits begin in the sixth full month after the onset date SSA finds (rule:waiting_5_months), and Medicare after 2 years (rule:medicare_2_years). You may also qualify for SSI at the same time (rule:ssi_concurrent), and your spouse or children for family benefits (rule:family_benefits).

While on SSDI, report work, income or medical improvement right away (rule:report_changes); a trial work period lets you test working (rule:trial_work). SSA reviews the disability from time to time (rule:cdr). To disagree with a decision, request reconsideration within 60 days (rule:reconsideration_60_days), then a hearing within 60 days (rule:hearing_60_days).

## The same facts open other programs

The facts SSDI asks for, a lasting disability and work status, also open the programs below:

- **SSI + California SSP (B023)**, [[california-ssi-ssp]]: SSI, for people with very low income and resources; can be paid with SSDI when SSDI is small.
- **State Disability Insurance (SDI) + Paid Family Leave (B028)**, [[california-sdi-paid-family-leave]]: California SDI pays up to 52 weeks for a non-work disability, often while SSDI is pending.
- **Workers' compensation (temporary disability) (B072)**, [[california-workers-comp-temporary-disability]]: workers' compensation for a job injury; it can reduce SSDI.
- **Medi-Cal (Medicaid) (B011)**, [[california-medi-cal]]: health coverage during the 2 years before Medicare.
- **Medicare Savings Programs (QMB / SLMB / QI / QDWI) (B013)**, [[california-medicare-savings-programs]]: help with Medicare premiums once Medicare starts.
- **Medicare Part D Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) (B014)**, [[california-medicare-extra-help]]: help with Medicare prescription costs.
- **VA pension + Aid & Attendance (B029)**, [[california-va-pension-aid-attendance]]: receiving SSDI meets the VA pension's disability test for wartime veterans.
- **Social Security survivors benefits (B026)**, [[california-social-security-survivors]]: Social Security benefits for the family after a worker dies.

## How this page works

This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-ssdi.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-ssdi.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` carry the article's identity and jurisdiction, the procedure with its stages, every rule with its source id and verification status, the person's fields with their canonical fact names, the ontology edges into the benefits graph, the declared actions, the model's instructions, and the permissions the model has (none). The model's context is served separately at [/a/california-ssdi/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-ssdi/context): the same object, projected for a model, so there is one source of truth for the reader and the machine.

What is saved: a thread per phone number that texts, holding which articles it asked about, how many messages, and the facts it stated, so a person who comes back continues rather than restarts. The same phone number is treated as the same thread; a browser is never shown another phone's thread, and signing in is required before anything private crosses from text to screen. Every message, in either direction, is a row on this build's Ledger, as every action here is.

Figures carry their status in `facts.rules[].status`. ssa.gov answers 403 to the build and to curl from this Mac; its pages were read on this Mac in the in-app browser on 9 October 2026 and are recorded with their hashes in `facts.verification`.

SSDI has no income or asset test (rule:not_means_tested); the amount comes from the earnings record, which only SSA can calculate, so never estimate a dollar amount. Ask for at most two facts at a time, starting with the condition and how long it is expected to last, then current monthly earnings and years worked in the last 10; restate each as a canonical fact line (employment.history.years_worked_last_10 = 7). Report results as: potentially eligible, potentially ineligible, insufficient information, or requires SSA determination; always say SSA decides, with medical review by Disability Determination Services. Name SSI (B023) when work history is short. Give the 5-month wait, Medicare at 2 years, and 60-day appeal deadlines. Use facts.ontology.related_programs and facts.procedure.stages. Never claim an application was filed. Keep it short.",
