# SSI and California SSP (monthly cash for people 65 or older, blind or disabled with very low income): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

*Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays monthly cash to people who are 65 or older, blind or disabled and have very little income and resources; in California the state adds the State Supplementary Payment (SSP) and Medi-Cal comes with it. The combined maximum for January 2026 is $1,234 a month for an aged or disabled individual. Apply to the Social Security Administration online, by phone or at an office.*

## What SSI and California SSP is, in one paragraph

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program, run by the Social Security Administration, that pays monthly cash to adults and children who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and who have little or no income and resources. It does not depend on work history. California adds its own State Supplementary Payment (SSP) to the federal amount; SSA decides and pays both, and anyone who qualifies for SSI qualifies for SSP. In California an SSI/SSP recipient also gets Medi-Cal automatically. People barred only by immigration status may qualify for the state's CAPI instead.

  "value": "$1,234 a month",
  "label": "combined SSI/SSP maximum in California, individual, aged or disabled, January 2026 (CDSS, rule:ca_max_grant_2026)"
}
```
## Who may qualify
Three tests (rule:who): **age or disability**: 65 or older, blind, or a disability expected to last a year or more or end in death (rule:disability); **resources** (rule:resource_limit); and **income**, counted after SSA's exclusions (rule:earned_income_reduction).
| Figure | Amount | Rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Federal SSI maximum, individual, 2026 | $994 a month | rule:federal_amount_2026 |
| Federal SSI maximum, couple, 2026 | $1,491 a month | rule:federal_amount_2026 |
| SSI/SSP maximum in California, individual, January 2026 | $1,234 a month | rule:ca_max_grant_2026 |
| SSI/SSP maximum in California, couple, January 2026 | $2,099 a month | rule:ca_max_grant_2026 |
| Resource limit | $2,000 individual, $3,000 couple | rule:resource_limit |
| Work earnings guide | about $2,073 a month | rule:income_guide |
| Earnings in the month of applying, with a disability | under $1,690 | rule:sga_when_applying |
| Reduction for not paying your share of food and housing | up to $351.33 | rule:living_arrangement |
The home, one vehicle used for transportation and household goods do not count (rule:resource_exclusions). A lawful permanent resident qualifies only in listed cases (rule:noncitizens); otherwise CAPI may apply (rule:capi).
## What the model on this page can do for you
This article is also the context of a model you can text or chat with. The buttons under the title open Messages with a note already written, or a chat on this page. The model has read this exact page: the rules above with their source ids, the procedure below, and the other programs the same facts open. It asks for one or two facts at a time, starting with your age or disability and the money and other countable resources you have, tells you which rules you pass and which it cannot decide, names the programs you may also qualify for, and gives the exact next step. It has no tools: it cannot apply for you, and it says so. Every message is kept on this build's Ledger.
A screening here is a screening, not a decision. SSA decides.
## How to apply, and what happens after
Apply to the Social Security Administration **[online](https://www.ssa.gov/apply/ssi)**, by phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or at a local Social Security office (rule:apply_where). One application covers SSI and the California SSP (rule:ca_ssp), and Medi-Cal follows (rule:medi_cal).
SSA checks income and resources. For a disability claim, the state Disability Determination Services reviews medical records and may send you to an exam; this can take many months, and if approved you are paid for the months you were disabled during the process.
Once paid, report your wages, other income, and changes in resources or living arrangements each month (rule:report_monthly). To disagree with a decision, request reconsideration within 60 days (rule:reconsideration_60_days), then a hearing within 60 days of that decision (rule:hearing_60_days).
## The same facts open other programs
The facts SSI asks for, age, disability, income and resources, are the first facts of the programs below:
- **CAPI (Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants) (B024)**, [[california-capi]]: California cash for immigrants who would qualify for SSI/SSP except for immigration status.
- **Medi-Cal (Medicaid) (B011)**, [[california-medi-cal]]: Medi-Cal comes automatically with SSI/SSP in California.
- **SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) (B025)**, [[california-ssdi]]: Social Security Disability Insurance, based on work history; a person can receive both.
- **CalFresh (SNAP) (B001)**, [[california-calfresh]]: CalFresh; SSI/SSP recipients in California can apply.
- **In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) (B015)**, [[california-ihss]]: paid in-home care for aged, blind and disabled Medi-Cal recipients.
- **Medicare Savings Programs (QMB / SLMB / QI / QDWI) (B013)**, [[california-medicare-savings-programs]]: help paying Medicare premiums.
- **Medicare Part D Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) (B014)**, [[california-medicare-extra-help]]: help paying for Medicare prescription drugs.
- **VA pension + Aid & Attendance (B029)**, [[california-va-pension-aid-attendance]]: receiving SSI meets the VA pension's disability test for wartime veterans.
- **General Assistance / General Relief (GA/GR) (B022)**, [[california-general-assistance]]: county cash aid while an SSI application is pending.
## How this page works
This page is one JSON object. The page, the Markdown and the machine copy at [/a/california-ssi-ssp.json](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-ssi-ssp.json) are three views of it. Its `facts` carry the article's identity and jurisdiction, the procedure with its stages, every rule with its source id and verification status, the person's fields with their canonical fact names, the ontology edges into the benefits graph, the declared actions, the model's instructions, and the permissions the model has (none). The model's context is served separately at [/a/california-ssi-ssp/context](https://miscsubjects.com/a/california-ssi-ssp/context): the same object, projected for a model, so there is one source of truth for the reader and the machine.
What is saved: a thread per phone number that texts, holding which articles it asked about, how many messages, and the facts it stated, so a person who comes back continues rather than restarts. The same phone number is treated as the same thread; a browser is never shown another phone's thread, and signing in is required before anything private crosses from text to screen. Every message, in either direction, is a row on this build's Ledger, as every action here is.
Figures carry their status in `facts.rules[].status`. ssa.gov answers 403 to the build and to curl from this Mac; its pages were read on this Mac in the in-app browser and are recorded with their hashes in `facts.verification`. The combined California maximum is from a CDSS PDF the build cannot read; it was read on this Mac. All figures were checked on 9 October 2026.
Ask for at most two facts at a time, starting with age or disability and countable resources, then monthly income and living arrangement; restate each as a canonical fact line (household.assets.liquid = 1200). Count only countable resources (rule:resource_exclusions). If the only bar is immigration status, name CAPI (rule:capi). Report results as: potentially eligible, potentially ineligible, insufficient information, or requires SSA determination; always say SSA decides, and that disability is decided on medical evidence.
