Steve,

The historical quality of farming and grapes isn’t a future indicator anymore. Acres were being mismanaged at 6 acres per ton when you were paying $4,000 a ton. Take that as an example.

In this case, assume that if that same acre was being properly farmed at 3.3 acres per ton, you would have been paying roughly county average of $7,000 and change per ton, for again, a mismanaged acre.

I will be spending $100,000 this coming year upgrading the vineyard (and am open and able to spend more), and I’m going to aim to manage the vineyard at a higher quality level than Lombardi.

Thereafter assume a $185 bottle cost. Or assume the $85 bottle cost, in which case for a mix assume a $120 average bottle cost. As the disparity.

If you purchased at $12,000 a ton, and bottled at industry averages, you would still be making it to the bottle for around $20 / bottle for $120-$185 /bottle.

While I understand if you feel $18,500 is too high, the numerical of $4,000-$7,000 isn’t interesting to me.

The difference between my mother and I is she resorted to the vineyard for income, while I carry income myself which makes the sale of grapes nominal to my incremental income or general ability to hold the vineyard, so, I’m in a different position.

As detailed, I would like you to make a tapered and boutique grape coming off of the property.

There is always room to negotiate, but, when we are dealing with an objective of making grapes which will go into and satisfy the $185 bottle, it’s not tenable for us to discuss grape quality of $4,000 a ton which is no longer relevant.

I think it’s important that you speak with Mike, and that we see if we can make satisfactory grape changes to accommodate $185 bottles en bulk.

Best Regards,

Cyrus

Hello Cyrus,

I have  bought grapes from your Mother’s vineyard at $4 , 000 a ton for the last nine years .

Even with that lower than average price, I have yet to ma k e a profit.

Something you may not be aware of is the processing costs are actually more than grape cost.

Also m uch of our wine goes out through distribution at more than 50% off the list price (SRP).

So it is difficult to make a profit. Making wine is an expensive proposition

Your proposed price of $18,500 is unrealistically high.

I  doubt cult wineries  pay $18,500 a ton.

It’s a nice goal to shoot for but you will unlikely find any winery willing to take a chance on your grapes for that price.

I can easily find higher quality grapes for $5000-$ 7 000 a ton from established vineyards  with a track record of good farming and quality.

There is a downward pressure on grape prices  since there was a glut of grapes in 2019 .

I heard stories of some growers could not being able to sell their grapes.

Would hate to see you get into a situation like that in 2020.

Good luck to you.

Steve
