The Grain
The Grain
System notes
The universe exhibits a directional bias in configuration space (the 'grain') that favors certain structural patterns across all scales and substrates, independent of causal communication between instances.
Order is not against entropy; order is entropy's most efficient instrument. Local negentropy accelerates global gradient dissipation.
Eight pattern families recur across scales separated by thirty-plus orders of magnitude: branching, spirals, waves, symmetry, flow networks, bounded chaos, memory, and scale invariance.
The 'eight-ness' of the pattern families is phenomenological, not derived from first principles. A ninth pattern may exist, and a unifying principle may reduce the eight to one.
Convergence across sixty-four independent schools and thousands of thinkers on the same structural map is evidence for the grain, not merely an artifact of selection bias or shared cultural lineage.
