John von Neumann: Self-Reproducing Automata and the Ladder of Memory
What von Neumann Saw
John von Neumann examined how machines could copy themselves. He built formal models of systems that contain their own description. These models showed reproduction through a constructor that reads a tape and builds a copy. The tape holds the instructions for the whole system.
His work started from lectures in 1948 and 1949. It continued through notes completed after his death. The result was a theory that treated self-reproduction as a logical threshold. Once crossed, machines gain the capacity for complexity growth.

Limits and Disconfirming Edges
The cellular automaton environment remains abstract. No physical implementation existed in von Neumann’s time. Real chemistry introduces noise and error rates absent from the clean tape model.
Reductionist views note that the threshold of complexity explains possibility, not necessity in biology. Later work on RNA world and metabolic cycles adds layers not captured in the constructor-tape split.
The model assumes perfect copying fidelity except for explicit mutations. Biological systems show continuous degradation and repair mechanisms outside the original specification.
