The Logic

You watch a river. It cuts a canyon. Gravity pulls. Water obeys. The canyon is the river's purpose made stone.

You watch a tumor. It hijacks blood vessels. It evades immune cells. It optimizes for growth. The tumor has no mind. It has a purpose. The purpose kills the host.

Teleology says selection explains the mechanism. But the mechanism points somewhere. The eye sees. The wing flies. The heart beats. These are not random. They are directed.

You see the same pattern across 2,300 years. Aristotle wrote in Athens. Leibniz wrote in Hanover. Whitehead wrote in London. Peirce wrote in Cambridge. Teilhard wrote in Paris. Either the universe has a directional bias. Or the human brain cannot help but see one.

The Evidence

Rome built roads for 500 years. The purpose was conquest. The roads outlasted the empire by 2,000 years. The teleology survived the organism.

Charles Ponzi promised 50% returns in 45 days. He took $20 million in 1920. That equals $330 million today. He paid early investors with late investors' money. Cancer kills 10 million people per year. A tumor has one goal: replicate. It builds blood vessels. It evades immune cells. It metastasizes. The tumor has no mind. It has a telos. And the telos wins.

The Physics of Aim

Modern science killed three of Aristotle's causes. It kept one. The efficient cause. Push, not pull. Force, not aim.

The Honest Limits

You feel purpose. That is undeniable. Whether purpose exists outside your feeling is the question.

Dennett says you are a purpose-detection machine. You see faces in clouds. You see intention in software. You see destiny in history. Your brain projects teleology onto noise. The intentional stance is useful. It is not true.
