## The Nature of Systems

Systems are the **aqueducts of healthy society**. They exist to move what ought to flow — justice, function, equilibrium — to those who depend on them.

When they work, they are **invisible**. When they fail, the people downstream die of thirst.

Systems are not incidentally important. They are the medium through which ethical life is possible at scale. A society is only as healthy as the integrity of its systems. And systems are only as healthy as the actors who steward and check them.

## Claims

- **Claim:** Systems are the medium of ethical life at scale · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** high
- **Claim:** System health is invisible when functioning, catastrophic when failing · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** high
- **Claim:** System integrity depends on steward and checker health · **Tier:** system · **Confidence:** medium

## Example

A water utility functions perfectly for decades. Residents never think about it. When corruption captures the procurement process, substandard pipes are installed. Five years later, contamination occurs. The system was invisible until it failed — and the failure was downstream of capture.

## What Would Falsify This

- Evidence that societies with weak systems but strong individual virtue consistently outperform societies with strong systems.
- Cases where system failure had no downstream harm.
