**C16** (Branching) contradicts **C10** (Scale Invariance)

**Tension:** If branching networks are optimal transport solutions (C16), they should be engineering-optimal — not necessarily fractal. If they are fractal (C10, scale-invariant), they must follow power-law scaling — but engineering optimality often produces exponential, not power-law, scaling.

**Resolution status:** PARTIALLY RESOLVED

**What would settle it:** A definitive proof that Murray’s Law (r^3) follows from fractal geometry rather than viscous dissipation optimization; OR demonstration that optimal transport under realistic biological constraints necessarily produces fractal, not exponential, scaling.

**Current state:** Bejan’s constructal law claims to derive branching from optimization, but the derivation assumes a fractal Ansatz. WBE (1997) derive the 3/4 scaling exponent from network geometry plus minimization, suggesting both nodes are partially right.

**Honest assessment:** The tension is more apparent than real — both branching and fractality emerge from the same physical constraints (space-filling + minimum cost). But the rival frames of each node are in genuine tension: one says geometry is primary, the other says optimization is primary.

# Disconfirming Edge 4: Fine-Tuning vs Symmetry

slug: oip-disconfirming-edge-4 · https://miscsubjects.com/a/oip-disconfirming-edge-4 · tags: OIP, catalogue, disconfirming, edge · updated 2026-08-06T08:57:54.168Z

**C24** (Fine-Tuning) contradicts **C03** (Symmetry)

**Tension:** Symmetry (C03) implies conservation laws are fundamental and necessary. Fine-tuning (C24) implies the constants of these laws are contingent and improbable. If the constants are arbitrary, the symmetries are not fundamental — they are accidental. If the symmetries are fundamental, the constants should be derivable.

**Resolution status:** OPEN

**What would settle it:** A fundamental theory (e.g., string theory, loop quantum gravity) that derives all constants from first principles with no free parameters; OR empirical confirmation of a multiverse with varying constants, rendering fine-tuning a selection effect.

**Current state:** String theory has ~10^500 vacua (landscape problem) — it predicts variation, not uniqueness. Loop quantum gravity does not yet predict the constants. Neither resolves the tension.

**Honest assessment:** This is the deepest open problem in the catalogue. It asks: are the laws of physics necessary or contingent? The symmetry–conservation correspondence (T0) says necessary. The fine-tuning observation (T3) says contingent. Both cannot be fully right.

# Disconfirming Edge 3: Emergence vs Least Action

slug: oip-disconfirming-edge-3 · https://miscsubjects.com/a/oip-disconfirming-edge-3 · tags: OIP, catalogue, disconfirming, edge · updated 2026-08-06T08:57:48.073Z

**C21** (Emergence) contradicts **C02** (Least Action)

**Tension:** If everything extremizes action (C02), then emergence (C21) is merely the appearance of new minima at larger scales — not genuinely new laws. But emergence claims new principles are irreducible.

**Resolution status:** OPEN

**What would settle it:** A complete derivation of emergent phenomena (superconductivity, life, consciousness) from the least action principle alone, with no new Lagrangian at each scale; OR proof that each emergent level requires a new Lagrangian that cannot be derived from the lower-level one.

**Current state:** Effective field theory in physics partially resolves this — higher-level Lagrangians ARE derivable from lower-level ones, but with renormalized parameters that are computationally irreducible. The ontological status of this irreducibility is disputed.

**Honest assessment:** This is the reductionism–emergence debate in technical dress. The honest position: epistemically irreducible (we cannot compute it), but ontologically continuous (no new fundamental forces at each scale).

# Disconfirming Edge 2: Free Energy Principle vs Criticality

slug: oip-disconfirming-edge-2 · https://miscsubjects.com/a/oip-disconfirming-edge-2 · tags: OIP, catalogue, disconfirming, edge · updated 2026-08-06T08:57:42.241Z

**C13** (Free Energy Principle) contradicts **C05** (Criticality)

**Tension:** If FEP is universal (all systems minimize free energy), then criticality should be derivable from FEP — but critical systems are NOT minimizing anything local; they operate at a point of maximal sensitivity, not minimal surprise.

**Resolution status:** OPEN

**What would settle it:** A derivation showing that self-organized criticality IS the free-energy-optimal state for certain classes of systems; OR proof that critical systems do NOT minimize free energy, falsifying the universality claim of FEP.

**Current state:** Some Friston collaborators have attempted to derive criticality from FEP (e.g., Friston et al., 2012, “Active Inference and Agency”), but the derivation is contested. Criticality researchers (e.g., Beggs, Markovic) maintain that criticality is a distinct principle.

**Honest assessment:** This is a genuine theoretical tension. If FEP swallows criticality, it gains strength. If criticality resists absorption, FEP’s universality claim is weakened.

# Disconfirming Edge 1: Selection vs Teleology

slug: oip-disconfirming-edge-1 · https://miscsubjects.com/a/oip-disconfirming-edge-1 · tags: OIP, catalogue, disconfirming, edge · updated 2026-08-06T08:57:36.342Z

**C09** (Selection) contradicts **C25** (Teleology)

**Tension:** Does natural selection exhaust apparent purpose, or is there a residue of directedness that selection cannot account for?

**Resolution status:** UNRESOLVED

**What would settle it:** Demonstration of (a) an evolutionary trend that is not random walk, not local fitness gradient, and not thermodynamic dissipation — requiring a new causal category; OR (b) complete derivation of all apparent purpose from selection + dissipation, rendering teleology redundant.

**Current state:** C09 (T1 biology) has overwhelming empirical support. C25 (T3/T4) has no accepted physical mechanism. The burden of proof is entirely on C25. The fault line is clear: mechanism vs. interpretation.

**Honest assessment:** The tension is asymmetrical. Selection is operational; teleology is load-optional. They coexist in the graph only because the question (“why does nature appear purposive?”) has not been fully dissolved.

# Disconfirming Edge — Variational Family Collapse

## §SELF — oip-disconfirming-edge-variational-family-collapse

**What this page is:** the edge that attacks inflated independent node counts inside the computing-physics variational cluster.
**What it explains:** free energy, Pareto-style efficiency frontiers, least action, and gradient dissipation can be coats of one family.
**Why read it:** your own collapse threshold needs an honest denominator.

### Claim under attack

"Catalogue nodes are independent if separately named."

### Counter

Independence requires **mechanism distinction**, not synonym distinction. Until mechanism distinction is shown, count the family once for independence metrics.

# Disconfirming Edge Selection Rule

## §SELF — oip-disconfirming-edge-selection-rule

**What this page is:** the rule for publishing edges where GRAIN patterns **contradict** each other.
**What it explains:** why confirming edges alone are confirmation bias; when an edge must be published.
**Why read it:** five disconfirming edges against more confirming edges is a suspicious ratio unless the selection rule is public.

### Selection rule

Publish a disconfirming edge when **any** of:

1. Two named patterns make **opposite predictions** about the same observable class.
2. Two catalogue nodes are **notation-duplicates** of one mechanism (variational cousins) — the edge documents the collapse.
3. A no-go theorem forces a **bound** between two families.
4. A reviewer can name the tension in one sentence — then the edge must exist or the corpus is hiding.

### Ratio honesty

If mapping is honest, tension is normal. Prefer **more** disconfirming edges than flattering ones until the space is saturated. Absence of tension is a red flag, not a victory.

# Disconfirming Edge — Free Energy vs Least Action

## §SELF — oip-disconfirming-edge-free-energy-vs-least-action

**What this page is:** a published tension between free-energy / dissipative accounts and least-action / extremal accounts.
**What it explains:** minimize vs extremize is not the same claim; listing both as independent convergence nodes without this edge flatters the thesis.
**Why read it:** this is the kind of fight the catalogue must surface, not bury.

### The conflict

- **Least action / calculus of variations:** physical trajectories extremize an action functional (often minimize, sometimes saddle).
- **Free energy / dissipative structure:** systems maintain order by gradient consumption; the story is about **minimizing free energy** under constraints, not about the same action functional as classical mechanics.

They rhyme. They are not automatically one node. Treating C01-style gradient dissipation, free-energy principles, and least action as three independent convergences **inflates N**.

### What would reconcile them

A derivation showing free-energy gradients and least-action paths are the **same** variational object under a stated transform — with domain of validity. Until that derivation is cited in-page, the edge stands: **do not count both as fully independent**.
