## Article
- **slug:** `systems-design-kill-switch`
- **title:** Systems Design: The Kill Switch
- **url:** https://miscsubjects.com/a/systems-design-kill-switch
- **register:** oip_protocol
- **updated:** 2026-07-04T06:59:25.267Z
- **tags:** OIP, systems-design, philosophy

## Body

## The Claim
Remove the a4 axiom and the system collapses completely.

## Definitions
A4: the axiom that injustice is the base unit of wrong.
Kill switch: a structural property that causes total collapse when a foundation is removed.
Load-bearing: a property where removing the element causes total collapse.
Binary failure: a failure mode with no intermediate state.
Degraded state: a state where the system functions with reduced capability.

## The Logic
1. The system has a foundation.
2. The foundation is a4.
3. Every downstream element derives from a4.
4. If you remove a4, the foundation is gone.
5. No downstream element has independent support.
6. Therefore the system collapses.
7. The collapse is binary.
8. The system does not degrade.
9. The system becomes a different thing.
10. That thing is a common system.
11. A common system traps actors in opacity.
12. The build is designed to die rather than become that thing.
13. The kill switch is the ultimate safety feature.
14. A system without a kill switch can be repurposed.
15. The build cannot be repurposed.
16. The purpose is structural.
17. The structure is the purpose.

## The Evidence
The ledger requires a4. Without a4, the ledger is surveillance. The directory requires a4. Without a4, the directory is bureaucracy. The self-test requires a4. Without a4, the self-test is harassment. The laws require a4. Without a4, the laws are optional rules.

## The Falsifier
If any of the following holds, the claim fails:
1. If the system degrades when a4 is removed, the claim fails.
2. If the system continues to function with reduced capability, the claim fails.
3. If any downstream element has independent support, the claim fails.

## The Uncertainty
Whether a system can be built that collapses cleanly without side effects. Status: open.
