He received the Turing Award in 1991 \"for three distinct and complete achievements: LCF (Logic for Computable Functions), ML (MetaLanguage), and CCS (Calculus of Communicating Systems), and for his leading role in the formulation of the pi calculus.\" He held positions at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Edinburgh again, where he founded the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science.\n\n### Why His Work Matters\n\nMilner's work created formal tools for reasoning about programs that communicate.
