WELCOME TO NORSLED Northern California Sled Dog Rescue Home: Welcome NorSled Foster Focus Story Meet Melo Melo is a 3-year-old Husky/German Shepherd mix who is learning something he should have known all along: the world can be a safe and happy place. Melo had a heartbreaking beginning. He spent much of his early life isolated in a backyard shed with very little human interaction. His world was essentially that shed, so many of the everyday sights, sounds, people, and experiences that other dogs grow up knowing are still completely new to him. And unfortunately, the limited exposure he did have to people during that time was not positive. Today, unfamiliar people, particularly men, loud voices, raised hands, and unexpected sights and sounds can still frighten him. When he becomes scared, his instinct is to get away and find safety. But that isn’t the whole story. Once Melo trusts you, you get to see the dog underneath the fear. He’s sweet, smart, attentive, and surprisingly silly. He loves the people he trusts and has learned to look to them for reassurance. He rides beautifully in the car, walks well on leash, listens to his person, and takes treats with a polite gentleness. And then there’s the grass. Melo absolutely loves it. He’ll flop down, roll around, and sometimes turn into a 75-pound goofball, rolling and somersaulting over the legs of someone he trusts. He’s also recently discovered the joy of toys. A volunteer introduced him to a toy kept in the car, and now grabbing it for a little play session has become part of his routine. Melo has made remarkable progress with patient, consistent people. Patricia, one of the NorSled volunteers, has been taking him on regular outings and giving him what she calls “adventure challenges,” gradually introducing him to everyday experiences such as people, bikes, strollers, traffic, and unfamiliar environments. Things that once frightened him can now be handled with more confidence. Every positive experience is helping Melo discover a little more of the world and a little more of himself. He still needs time, though. Melo needs a foster home that understands that trust takes time. He needs someone who will let him settle in, establish a routine, and learn that his person is there to keep him safe. He would do best with an experienced, patient dog person who is around frequently, enjoys daily walks, and wants to build a genuine bond with their dog. A compatible canine companion could be a wonderful addition, and a securely fenced yard is required. Because Melo can become overwhelmed by chaotic interactions, a home with older children would be a better fit than one with young children. Melo isn’t looking for someone to “fix” him. He’s looking for someone willing to give him the time, patience, structure, and love he needs to keep discovering who he is. And if the silly, happy dog who rolls around in the grass is any indication, there’s a lot more of Melo waiting to come out.
