This exhibition shines a light on one aspect of you as an artist: how you see or interpret another work of art, and how that perspective translates into your own art making. We are asking to see part of your process, how your artwork’s conception begins with a known masterpiece or another source. Selected works will be shown with wall labels that include your chosen pairing or echo. This companion piece illuminates influence, serves as homage, or references your study of another work. (As part of the submission process, you will be asked to upload an image of this secondary work that inspired your own.). Your secondary image—e.g. chosen work of influence—included on the accompanying enlarged wall label, will enable a deeper understanding of appropriations, starting points transformed, or simply artistic muses. These works in dialogue with your own and proudly hung together for Pairings & Echoes will serve to ramp up the conversations in building community through art by adding another dimension for comparison. Submissions will be evaluated on engagement with the theme, technique, overall mastery, creativity, and originality. You will be requested to upload an image of your original along with an image of the work that inspired yours. Special consideration will be given to how thoughtfully and meaningfully the chosen pairing or echo enhances the dialogue with your own work. We hope to offer layered programming around this exhibit to introduce selected artists to a broad audience.
