EVALUATION BY JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY In April 2024 HNP has been evaluated by Johns Hopkins University for impact, community involvement and expansion. A year-long research produced a policy brief, highlighting our strengths and creating recommendations for improvement to set us up for expansion. As a result of the analysis, the strengths of the project were identified, such as: comprehensive approach to water and sanitation, cafeteria services and the meeting halls, laundry services, SACCO, courses and capacity development, urban farming/hydroponics, security, including the wide provision of street lights. Policy Brief THE PROBLEM Worldwide, over a billion people live in slums. That number will double by 2030 (UN Habitat). Life in slums is defined by lack of basic water, sanitation, and energy infrastructure. These conditions fuel rampant social and health problems and accelerate the vicious cycle of extreme poverty. THE SOLUTION We are pioneering a new model for integrated service delivery, a single platform combining the services and supports needed to thrive. The Human Needs Project Kibera Centre provides the essential infrastructure and social services to empower people to break out of poverty. WHO WE ARE We are a team of volunteers, innovators and local community members who are collaborating internationally to build environmentally and financially sustainable “town centres” in urban slums that provide opportunities for residents to realize their full potential and chart a path out of poverty. Our active project is the Human Needs Project Kibera Centre in Nairobi, Kenya which opened its doors in 2014. READ OUR STORY OUR MODEL Traditional approach is scattered. Small projects with zero longevity. We are creating a long-term solution, an integrated service delivery that covers every basic human need service in one "town center". Our pilot project the Human Needs Project Kibera Centre is managed and run by Kiberans who continuously ensure that we only offer services and products demanded by the local community. The backbone of the Human Needs Project Kibera Centre is a cutting-edge, independent, environmentally-friendly infrastructure, which powers affordable water, sanitation, and energy services. The physical infrastructure is overlayed with social services, allowing the community to access opportunities and self-actuation through training in IT, Arts, Business, Clean Technologies, and more.
