Transforming public spaces into vibrant native plant habitats Our projects boost biodiversity and foster environmental stewardship through community outreach and education, while adding a touch of beauty and joy. To play, press and hold the enter key. To stop, release the enter key. We're expanding habitat What began as a single marshland revitalization in 2021 has grown into 40,000+ square feet of thriving native habitat. Refugia Marin has planted thousands of California native plants, built outdoor classrooms, and inspired the next generation of environmental stewards. Today, we have a growing network of thriving gardens across southern Marin County. By working alongside community members and partnering with cities, school districts, and other organizations and institutions, we're creating places where nature brings people together. ABOUT US Flame Skimmer Dragonfly Photo Credit: Leah Prahm Photography Native Plants Matter Long before our neighborhoods, parking lots, and playing fields existed, California's native plants supported an incredible web of life. Today, wildlife struggles to find the food and shelter it needs. Even planting small natural spaces can make a remarkable difference Native Sweat Bee Photo Credit: Amineh Stevenson Bee on Seaside Daisy Photo Credit: Leah Prahm Photography Native Plants Work Smarter Bursting with color, texture, and even fragrance, native plants attract bees, butterflies, and birds while also helping restore nature’s balance. Native plants: Grow naturally in our unique climate Provide nectar for native bees and other pollinators Support butterflies through every stage of their lives Create food, shelter, and nesting places for birds Thrive with little water once established Strengthen biodiversity across our communities Discover our Plant Lists Enjoy a short wander through our habitats Step inside our habitats and discover the places we've been growing together. Inspiring learning We educate the next generation of conservationists with hands-on learning, work days and events. Our programs spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and highlight the essential role of native plants in healthy ecosystems. LEARN MORE Explore the transformation A few years ago, this corner of Town Park was filled with invasive weeds. Today it's alive with California native plants, busy pollinators, birdsong, curious children, and volunteers who proudly call it "our habitat". Restoration doesn't have to begin with hundreds of acres. Sometimes it starts with one small space, and a community willing to care for it. LEARN MORE Gardens with character, bursting with life Each of our projects looks a little different. Some are outdoor classrooms. Some are community gathering places. All of them expand habitat and help connect vital wildlife corridors.
