We work to eliminate financial and access barriers so every person can safely and confidently participate in aquatic activities and be safe around water. Our Mission Soma Aquatics’ mission is to promote water safety in our communities, which is accomplished by providing swim lessons and pool access to anyone and everyone, regardless of your socioeconomic status. We aim to create a community where everyone can learn to swim and be safe around water, and Soma Aquatics is an advocate for those who have economic barriers (or other limitations) that prevent them from becoming confident swimmers. In Marin, we are offering free swim lessons and pool access for youth, adults, and families, using a combination of volunteer and professional instructors and lifeguards. It is our belief that we can build, establish, and maintain a community of families, friends, and neighbors, with our love for water and swimming as a commonality, and we strive to create a safe space to do so. Soma encourages participation at all skill levels, and promotes creative swimming and lifesaving programming. Against a socio-economic landscape, children and young adults of low-income families across the United States, who face barriers participating in the activity of their choice, could feel exclusion, isolation, and even humiliation. Without diminishing the importance of water safety, we don't want alack of resources, and/or lack of access to pools to be a limitation for children socially. For many young swimmers, swimming is an outlet, and not just a playful activity- the wide-ranging benefits include positive health effects, enhanced self-esteem, academic strengths, and lifelong friendships and networks that provide future opportunities for success. Participants who successfully complete the program are encouraged to participate competitively if interested. Soma works to create scholarship opportunities for youth to continue participation inaquatics sports.
