MarinMOCA is a gem in the heart of San Rafael. An important community hub for the North Bay, the exhibitions are outstanding, the programming is ambitious and thought-provoking, and the move to San Rafael has made it more accessible than ever. What makes it special is how intimate it is: you actually get to engage with the art and connect with the artists. Their educational programs, especially for teens, are excellent. And most importantly, it's just fun! Highly recommend!

So grateful to have this resource in downtown San Rafael. Thoughtful programming that connects to the rest of the Bay area arts community as well as our local neighborhood. Lots of opportunities to get involved.

A mecca for the artists around Marin County, this museum is more than just a gallery. The building’s many studios are used by local creators and you can stop by and chat with the painters and sculptors working here. Budding artists will find it particularly inspiring. The museum is unusually modern and dynamic for a small city, and exhibits are switched regularly in the large gallery space. The building itself, an off-the-wall take on the Spanish Mission style, is also well worth a look.

This is a wonderful, charming museum showcasing local art. The museum is nestled in a serene location and its exterior beauty matches the landscape. You’ll find ample, free parking. There is a suggested donation at the door. I went on a Friday morning and viewed the Altered Books Exhibit. The museum has a pleasant layout with about three main rooms, which are not very large. However, there is ample art to enjoy. I was pleasantly surprised by the open studios that allow guests to meet and talk to the resident artists, located on the first and second floors. I believe there are additional studios next to the museum that you can visit. Each artist has work on display and there are various prints available for sale outside their door. I felt like these studios were bonus exhibits! Some of the artists offer various classes and even one-on-one training. The second floor also houses a large exhibition room. During my visit, there was a large art mural painted by homeless youth of Marin, which was wonderful to see. Before you leave, be sure to check out their lovely gift shop. It has a little bit of everything and you may even find a gem in their clearance section. Overall, this is a great local museum and I will definitely return to support community arts.

MarinMOCA is an anchor to the cultural district in San Rafael and a valued part of the North Bay art community. The museum rotates exhibits every few months and has a lot of free public programming. They even offer art classes which are listed on their website. Once a month the museum has a free Family Day arts project that is a great activity to do with children. Definitely a must visit next time you are on 5th street!
