Went here to grab a good burger. Right as I walked in I noticed that the decor was really nice and there was plenty of space for a sit down meal. The young guy behind the counter was probably high school aged. Noticing this detail made me realize the cooks peaking out of the kitchen were also very young, likely high school aged. The guy who took my order was very friendly and laughed at my dumb banter. I stepped off to one side to wait for my order to be made and listened to what could have been a joking or serious argument between the kitchen staff and friendly counter guy, wherein he proceeded to tell them that he was in charge of them, or soon to be in charge. It struck me as a bit unprofessional to have this conversation in front of a customer, and it only served to reinforce my "these are unsupervised high school kids" vibe. The food arrived and I dug into my fries. The truffle oil tasted great over the skinny fries, but there was just too much of it! It pooled towards the bottom of the cardboard fry container they gave me, and the fries at the bottom of the container were really oily. Clearly a great idea but executed with a heavy hand. The shake in contrast was great, it had a nice balance of the artificial strawberry "red" flavor and then that natural, slightly neutral flavor of real strawberries. I would rank it above average overall. Lastly, there's the burger. I found the burger disappointing in a strange way. It tasted weird, and it wasn't something weird or totally off the wall and California-cool improvised burger. It was a regular cheeseburger. I cannot place the taste but it just was not particularly great. Adding to this is the fact that there was no lettuce or tomatoes accompanying my poor burger. The meat itself looked like it was steam finished, but instead of the darker seared or dense appearance, it looked kind of limp and pale. Ugh, no like! Also, the trademark, smashed style just made my burger kind of crumbly in the bad way that causes a mess in your car, rather than the good way that melts in your mouth. Overall I can't give this place lower than three stars because it was a well kept place with some really great shakes and fries, and even greater staff! Well, except maybe the kitchen staff if that burger is any indication. I am actually really sad this place didn't knock it out of the park that night, I was craving a great burger, and what I got made realize I should have excepted my first instinct and saved over 10 dollars by getting the same meal at McDonald's next door.
