EMERGENCE / "MORE IS DIFFERENT"
System notes
You cannot scale a law. You must replace it. Scale introduces new causation, new entities, and new laws that the parts cannot imagine.
Philip Anderson's 'More Is Different' (1972) established that reduction to fundamental laws does not confer the ability to reconstruct the universe from those laws. Higher levels are not derivable; they are autonomous.
Superconductivity is an emergent collective phenomenon. Cooper pairs and zero resistance are not properties of a single electron but inventions of the electron crowd in a lattice.
The falsifier of emergence is successful reduction: derive superconductivity from one electron without invoking Cooper pairs, or consciousness from one neuron without invoking networks.
Social institutions, languages, and market prices emerge from individual choices but constrain the individuals that produce them. No individual designed the system, yet the system maintains patterns individuals did not author.
