Access · Command line

Run the system’s actions by typing commands in a terminal

A CLI (command-line interface) is a program you use by typing commands in a terminal instead of clicking. The system has two. misc understands short phrases such as “time now” or “message send”. console-app runs an action by its exact name. Both send each command to the system, which checks it, runs it and writes it to the Ledger.

The programs come from us, and connect with a key from us.

Terminal
$ misc time nowSunday, September 27, 2026 at 8:32 AM PDT $ misc find calendar# every action whose name or description mentions “calendar” $ misc message send dana@example.com "Running 10 minutes late" --dry-run# --dry-run shows what would run and sends nothing $ misc receipt fa19caae-c03d-4c4a-9c05-0f479cacc667# the Ledger entries of one run: what was asked, what ran, what came back

An illustration of a terminal session. The first answer is in the form the system gives; the lines starting with # explain the others.

How much detail

Developers: choose “For your developer” for exact action names, flags and exit codes.

What a command looks like

A command is a few words: what to do, then its inputs

misc turns the words into one action from the Directory, then runs it. console-app takes the action’s exact name.

Type thisWhat it does
misc time nowToday’s date and time.
misc find calendarThe actions whose names or descriptions match “calendar”.
misc message send dana@example.com "Running 10 minutes late"Send a message. The address decides the channel: a phone number or an Apple ID email goes by iMessage, a #channel goes to Slack, wa: and a number goes to WhatsApp.
misc do "Check the supplier’s stock page every morning"Open a task.
misc statusThe open tasks.
misc receipt the call’s referenceThe Ledger entries of one run. Add --web to open them in a browser.
misc hook listYour webhooks. Also: show, add, test, deliveries, disable.
console-app find "open hours"Search the actions.
console-app how an action’s nameEvery way to call one action, each written out whole.
Running an action by its exact name
# run one action by its exact name
misc run NOW
console-app call NOW

# inputs: key=value pairs, or one JSON object
misc run NOW '{}'

# flags
--json answers as JSON, for another program to read
--yes, -y confirm in advance (for scripts)
--dry-run show what would run, send nothing
--quiet, -q print only the answer

# exit codes
0 worked · 1 error · 2 not understood · 3 needs confirmation · 4 no key or a wrong key

Before it sends

A command that sends a message or deletes something asks first

Before a command sends a message or deletes something, misc asks you to confirm, and runs it only if you say yes. In a script, with nobody at the keyboard, it stops instead of sending, and says so. Add --dry-run to see what would run without running it.

  • An action that is not allowed is refused whatever you type, and the refusal is written to the Ledger.

What you see

The command names the action it is about to run and waits for y (yes) or n (no). Choose “For your developer” to see the exact prompt.

At a keyboard
$ misc message send dana@example.com "Running 10 minutes late"
run IMSG_SEND? [y/N]
In a script, with nobody at the keyboard
confirmation needed: IMSG_SEND may send. Repeat with --yes.
# exit code 3

Receipts

Each command’s Ledger entries can be printed in the terminal

misc receipt followed by a call’s reference prints the Ledger entries of that run: what was asked, what ran and what came back. Followed by a task’s number, it prints the entries of the whole task.

Scripts

The same commands work in scripts and scheduled jobs

Anything you type can also be saved in a script and run on a schedule: every morning at 7, for example.

In a script, add --json to get answers another program can read, and --yes to confirm in advance an action that sends. The exit code says whether it worked.

Exit codes: 0 worked, 1 error, 2 the command was not understood, 3 needs confirmation, 4 no key or a wrong key. The key is read from the MISC_SHEETS_KEY setting; it is sent in a header and never printed.

Without the programs

A Mac’s own terminal can call the system directly with curl, one line per action.

Choose “For your developer” to see the line.

Terminal (curl)
curl -sS -X POST https://miscsubjects.com/api/run \
  -H "x-sheets-key: YOUR_KEY" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  --data '{"tool": "NOW", "args": {}}'

YOUR_KEYis a placeholder: you get a key from us.

What it reaches

Every action in the Directory can be run from the terminal

1,335actions in the Directory
26ways to call each one; the two programs are two of them
—different actions already run, on the Ledger
