CalFresh (California food benefits): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

CalFresh is California's name for SNAP, the federal food benefit: money on an EBT card each month, for households whose income is under a limit. This page carries the current limits and benefit amounts with their official sources, the application step by step, the interview and renewal rules that lose people their benefits, and the other programs the same facts open. Text the number on this page or open the chat, and a model that has read this exact page helps you check your eligibility and find everything else you may qualify for.

What CalFresh is, in one paragraph

CalFresh is what California calls SNAP, the federal food benefit once known as food stamps. A household that qualifies gets money each month on an EBT card, which works like a debit card at grocery stores and farmers markets. The program is federally funded, run by the state, and operated by each of California's 58 county welfare departments, which is why the interview and the decision come from your county. Working people qualify. Many students, seniors and mixed-immigration-status households qualify. The most common reason eligible people never get it is assuming it is not for them.

$306 to $1,841
the maximum monthly benefit for a household of one to eight, 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027 (USDA FNS, rule:max_allotment)

Who may qualify

Two things decide it: who is in the household and how much comes in each month.

The household is everyone who lives together and buys and prepares meals together (rule:household). A roommate who buys their own food is a separate household. A parent and an adult child who share groceries are one.

Income is tested two ways. The federal rule is a gross-income limit at 130% of the poverty level and a net-income limit at 100% (rule:gross_130, rule:net_100). California adds modified categorical eligibility: a household with no elderly or disabled member is categorically eligible when its gross income is at or below 200% of the poverty level, and its savings are not counted (rule:ca_mce_200). A household with an elderly or disabled member has no gross-income test at all; it must only pass the net test (rule:elderly_disabled_no_gross). Every household must pass the net test.

The federal figures below are the FY2027 standards, effective 1 October 2026 through 30 September 2027, for the 48 states and DC. The 200% line is twice the 100% net figure in the same row.

The benefit a household actually receives is the maximum for its size minus 30% of its net income, so a household with income gets less than the maximum. Net income is gross income minus the standard deduction ($217 for one to three people, $229 for four, $268 for five, $308 for six or more), an earned-income deduction, and shelter costs above half of income up to a cap of $769 for households without an elderly or disabled member (rule:standard_deduction, rule:shelter_cap). Those deductions are why a household should never assume it is over the line from its gross pay alone.

Students enrolled at least half time in higher education are excluded unless an exemption applies: working 20 hours a week, caring for a young child, receiving CalWORKs, or being eligible for work-study, among others (rule:students). Immigration status is screened per member: an eligible member can apply alone, and the household is never told no as a whole.

How to apply, and what happens after

Apply online at BenefitsCal, the single California portal for CalFresh, CalWORKs and Medi-Cal, or through your county welfare office by phone, in person or on the paper application CF 285 (rule:apply_where). GetCalFresh, which many people remember, no longer takes applications and now sends people to BenefitsCal.

File first, gather later. Benefits are paid back to the date the application is received, not the date it is complete (rule:benefits_from_filing_date). Every day of delay is a lost day. A household with less than $100 in cash and less than $150 in monthly income, or whose income and savings are less than its rent and utilities, is entitled to expedited benefits within 7 days (rule:expedited_7_days).

The same facts open other programs

The two facts CalFresh asks for first, household size and monthly gross income, are the first two facts of most means-tested programs in California. A household screened here has already answered the opening question of:

  • Medi-Cal (B011): health coverage; the same income lines, and in California the Medi-Cal connection is what makes the 200% categorical eligibility work.
  • WIC (B003): food for pregnant women, infants and children under five.
  • CalWORKs (B021): cash aid for families with children; a CalWORKs household is categorically eligible for CalFresh.
  • CARE and FERA (B043, B044): 20% to 35% off the electricity and gas bill from the utility.
  • LIHEAP (B045): a one-time energy bill payment and weatherization.
  • CalFresh Restaurant Meals (B009): for recipients who are 60+, disabled or homeless, prepared meals at participating restaurants.
  • CalEITC (B049) and the Young Child Tax Credit (B050) at tax time; Lifeline (B047) for the phone bill; subsidized child care (B060) where work is the need.

Those connections are not written here by hand. They are read from the California benefits graph, the object that holds all 80 programs, the life events that trigger them and the facts they share. A model screening you for CalFresh sees the same edges.
