Lots to love at BTY this month!

A LETTER FROM JENNIFER

Last week, Thich Nhat Hanh passed away, a Buddhist teacher who is globally lauded for peace activism and social justice work during the Vietnam War and the civil rights era of the sixties, and the significant contribution of the role that kindness plays in mindfulness to a burgeoning western mindfulness movement.

Thich Nhat Hanh embodied his teachings. He spoke of walking with such presence that it feels as though our feet are kissing the earth. And when others walked with him, they felt his words in their bodies.

Imagine our bodies meeting our mats with such presence that our practice becomes a means of learning to embody love.

Yesterday I found some notes that I had kept years ago. They were meant to be taken as vows from which to live by. Given human nature, vows are made and then remade. As many of us look at the commitments we made at the beginning of the year and "begin again," I hope these words inspire you as they have me.

Insights from Thich Nhat Hanh's,

"The Five Mindfulness Trainings"

  1. Reverence For Life
  • “Seeing that harmful actions arise from anger, fear, greed, and intolerance, which in turn come from dualistic and discriminative thinking, I will cultivate openness, non-discrimination, and non-attachment to views in order to transform violence, fanaticism, and dogmatism in myself and in the world.”
  1. True Happiness
  • “I will practice looking deeply to see that the happiness and suffering of others are not separate from my own happiness and suffering; that true happiness is not possible without understanding and compassion.”
  1. True Love
  • “I am committed to cultivating responsibility and learning ways to protect the safety and integrity of individuals, couples, families, and society... Practicing true love, we know that we will continue beautifully into the future.”
  1. Loving Speech and Deep Listening
  • “Knowing that words can create happiness or suffering, I am committed to speaking truthfully using words that inspire confidence, joy, and hope. When anger is manifesting in me, I am determined not to speak. I will practice mindful breathing and walking in order to recognize and to look deeply into my anger.”
  1. Nourishment and Healing
  • “I will practice coming back to the present moment to be in touch with the refreshing, healing, and nourishing elements in me and around me, not letting regrets and sorrow drag me back into the past, nor letting anxieties, fear, or craving pull me out of the present moment.”

As always, all of our offerings below are ways in which you can learn to heal, strengthen, and learn to embody love such that those around you are uplifted by your presence. May we all lift each other up and may we all feel supported and loved.

For the month of February, all donations for our Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday community classes will be donated to the Loveland Foundation , an amazing organization dedicated to providing psychological services to women of color.

To True Love,

Jennifer and Everyone at BTY
