Cal Grant A, B and C (California's state college grant that does not have to be repaid): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

The Cal Grant is California's main college grant. Cal Grant A pays tuition, Cal Grant B adds a $1,648 first-year Access Award, and Cal Grant C pays for career and technical training, for California students under income and asset ceilings with a verified GPA. Apply with the FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application by March 2 (September 2 for community college awards).

What the Cal Grant is, in one paragraph

The Cal Grant is California's main financial aid program that does not need to be paid back, run by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC). There are three kinds. Cal Grant A pays tuition and fees at UC, CSU, some private colleges and community college bachelor's programs. Cal Grant B gives lower-income students an Access Award for living costs in the first year and adds tuition from the second year. Cal Grant C pays for career and technical training. Students do not pick one: CSAC places them from the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application, the GPA on file, financial need and the school listed. An Entitlement Award is guaranteed to every student who qualifies.

$15,588
the largest Cal Grant A amount listed for 2026-27 (University of California, 2026-27 cohort); CSU is $6,838 (CSAC, rule:award_a_2026_27)

Who may qualify

A California resident working toward a first undergraduate degree or certificate, at least half-time, with financial need, a verified GPA, and income and assets under the ceilings (rule:who). U.S. citizens, permanent residents, eligible non-citizens and AB 540 students qualify (rule:status).

Income ceilings for 2026-27 (rule:income_ceilings_2026_27), dependent students and independent students with dependents other than a spouse:
