Child Tax Credit + Additional CTC (the federal tax credit for children under 17): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

The federal Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,200 per child under 17 for tax year 2025, and up to $1,700 per child of it is refundable as the Additional Child Tax Credit for families with at least $2,500 of earned income. It is claimed on Form 1040 with Schedule 8812; parent and child need work-valid Social Security numbers.

What the Child Tax Credit is, in one paragraph

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a federal credit for each qualifying child under 17. It reduces the tax a family owes (rule:nonrefundable). When a family owes little or no tax, the refundable part, the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), pays cash back, but only with at least $2,500 of earned income (rule:actc, rule:actc_earned_2500). The parent and each child need a Social Security number valid for work (rule:ssn_valid_work). A dependent who does not qualify may get the smaller Credit for Other Dependents (rule:odc).

up to $2,200
per qualifying child, tax year 2025; up to $1,700 of it refundable (IRS, rule:max_ctc, rule:actc)

Who may qualify

Each child must be under 17 at year end (rule:child_under_17), a son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, sibling or their descendant (rule:child_relationship), live with the filer more than half the year (rule:child_lived), not pay more than half their own support (rule:child_support), be claimed as a dependent (rule:child_dependent), and be a U.S. citizen, national or resident alien (rule:child_citizen). Filer and child need work-valid SSNs (rule:ssn_valid_work).

Tax year 2025 amounts (rule:max_ctc, rule:actc, rule:actc_earned_2500, rule:phaseout, rule:odc):

ItemAmount
Child Tax Credit per childup to $2,200
Refundable part (ACTC) per childup to $1,700
Earned income needed for ACTCat least $2,500
Full credit income limit$200,000; $400,000 joint
Credit for Other Dependentsup to $500 per dependent

How to apply, and what happens after

There is no application. The credit is claimed on Form 1040 with Schedule 8812, and a family that does not normally file can file to claim it (rule:claim_on_return). VITA and TCE volunteers prepare returns free and IRS Free File offers free software (rule:free_prep; see Free tax preparation: VITA / TCE + Free File + CalFile (free ways to prepare and file federal and California returns): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next).

Refunds on returns claiming the ACTC are not issued before mid-February (rule:actc_refund_feb). An audit holds the refund until it ends (rule:audit_hold). A missed credit can be claimed within three years of the due date (rule:claim_window_3yr). After a disallowance, Form 8862 goes with the next claim (rule:form_8862). Disputes go to the IRS Independent Office of Appeals by the date in the IRS letter (rule:appeal_irs, rule:appeal_deadline).
