WIC (Women, Infants & Children) (California food, nutrition and breastfeeding support for pregnancy and children under 5): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

WIC gives pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum people and children under 5 in California monthly foods and a fruit and vegetable benefit on the California WIC Card, with nutrition education and breastfeeding support. Household income must be at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines, or the person must receive Medi-Cal, CalFresh or CalWORKs. You apply by appointment at a local WIC office.

What WIC is, in one paragraph

WIC is a federal food and nutrition program run in California by the Department of Public Health through local WIC agencies. It serves people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or within six months after a birth or pregnancy loss, and children under 5. A participant gets foods each month on the California WIC Card, a cash-value benefit for fruits and vegetables, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to health care. Working families and farm-worker families qualify. Every applicant gets a free health check at the WIC office, and only the local office can confirm eligibility.

$26 to $78 a month
the WIC Fruits and Vegetables Benefit per participant, by category, from April 2026, on top of the WIC foods (California WIC, rule:cvb_amounts)

Who may qualify

Three things decide it: who is applying, where they live, and household income.

Who: a person who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or within six months after a birth or pregnancy loss, or a child under 5 (rule:categories, rule:child_under_5). A parent, foster parent or other caregiver applies for a child.

Where: California residence (rule:ca_resident).

Income: gross household income before taxes at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines (rule:income_185). The household is everyone the applicant lives with and shares income and expenses with (rule:household). A pregnant applicant can add each expected baby to the household size when that makes the difference (rule:unborn_count). A person who receives Medi-Cal, CalFresh or CalWORKs, or whose child does, may be income eligible without the table (rule:adjunctive).

The table below is the federal 185% table for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027; California uses the same figures from 1 May 2026 (rule:ca_table_dates).

8$103,082$8,591$1,983
each additional+$10,508+$876+$203

Every applicant also needs a free health check by WIC staff before enrollment (rule:health_check).

How to apply, and what happens after

Make an appointment at a local WIC office; offices are listed by city and ZIP code on MyFamily.WIC.ca.gov (rule:apply_where). Bring ID for yourself and each child under 5, proof of address, proof of household income (a Medi-Cal card counts) and proof of pregnancy (rule:documents).
