Moving to another county or state in California: what to do first, deadlines, documents, and which benefits open

A move changes which county or state runs a household's benefits. CalFresh cannot be received in two places in the same month, neither CalFresh nor Medi-Cal may require a period of residence before benefits, and a Housing Choice Voucher can move outside the housing authority's area if the family notifies the housing authority and the owner before moving. This page lists the rule for each program and what to do first.

What happens when a household moves to another county or state

The place a household lives decides who runs its benefits. SNAP cannot be received in more than one household or project area in a month (s_lii_7cfr273_3_one), and no state may make a new arrival wait to qualify (s_lii_7cfr273_3_durational). Medicaid follows the state where the person lives and intends to reside, with no waiting period (s_lii_42cfr435_403_intends, s_lii_42cfr435_403_nodur). A Housing Choice Voucher can move with the family under portability (s_lii_24cfr982_353_port), but only after the family notifies the housing authority and the owner before moving out (s_lii_24cfr982_354_notice).
