211 (navigation infrastructure) (the free, confidential phone number for local help, open 24 hours): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

211 is the free, confidential, three-digit phone number that connects anyone to local help with food, housing, utility bills, transportation and health care. It answers 24 hours a day and has no eligibility test. Dial 2-1-1 or search 211.org; the programs it names decide eligibility.

What 211 is, in one paragraph

211 is the three-digit phone number for information and referral to local social services; the FCC designated it in 2000 (rule:what_211_is). It is not a benefit program. More than 200 local organizations answer it, including United Ways and Community Action Partnerships (rule:operators); in Los Angeles County it is 211 LA. It is free and confidential, calls can be anonymous (rule:free_confidential), and it answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (rule:hours). Most requests are for housing, food, transportation and health care (rule:needs).

Who may qualify

Anyone. 211 has no income or eligibility test (rule:no_eligibility_test). The programs it refers you to have their own rules, which their articles on this site carry.

How to apply, and what happens after

Dial 2-1-1, or search 211.org for your local 211. Have your ZIP code, what you need, and your household size and monthly income ready; the programs 211 names will ask. 211 LA answers in multiple languages and by TTY (rule:languages).

211 gives referrals. You then apply to each program it names. A denial comes from that program, and the appeal goes to it (rule:no_appeal).
