Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI, monthly federal payments for workers who cannot work because of a disability): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

Social Security Disability Insurance pays monthly to people who have worked enough years and have a disability expected to last a year or more, with Medicare after 2 years of benefits. The amount depends on lifetime earnings, not on income or assets. Apply to the Social Security Administration online or by phone.

What Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is, in one paragraph

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is the federal insurance workers pay for through Social Security taxes. It pays a monthly benefit to a person who has worked long enough and has a physical or mental condition expected to keep them from substantial work for at least a year or to end in death. The amount is based on lifetime average earnings, not on current income or savings. Payments begin after a 5-month waiting period, and Medicare follows after 2 years of benefits. Family members may also be paid. The Social Security Administration decides, with medical decisions made by the state Disability Determination Services.

$1,690 a month
the 2026 substantial gainful activity limit for non-blind applicants who keep working ($2,830 if blind) (SSA, rule:sga_2026)

Who may qualify

All of these (rule:disability, rule:work_history): a condition that affects the ability to work for a year or more or will result in death; generally work in at least 5 of the last 10 years (less under age 24); and earnings no higher than SGA if still working (rule:sga_2026).

Work historygenerally 5 of the last 10 yearsrule:work_history

There is no income or asset test (rule:not_means_tested). Workers' compensation and some public disability payments can reduce SSDI (rule:offset).

How to apply, and what happens after

Apply to the Social Security Administration online or by phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (rule:apply_where). Have your medical sources, treatment dates and work history ready.

The state Disability Determination Services reviews the medical evidence and may schedule an exam. If approved, benefits begin in the sixth full month after the onset date SSA finds (rule:waiting_5_months), and Medicare after 2 years (rule:medicare_2_years). You may also qualify for SSI at the same time (rule:ssi_concurrent), and your spouse or children for family benefits (rule:family_benefits).

While on SSDI, report work, income or medical improvement right away (rule:report_changes); a trial work period lets you test working (rule:trial_work). SSA reviews the disability from time to time (rule:cdr). To disagree with a decision, request reconsideration within 60 days (rule:reconsideration_60_days), then a hearing within 60 days (rule:hearing_60_days).
