Older Americans Act meals (Meals on Wheels / congregate) (free group meals and home-delivered meals for Californians 60 and older): who qualifies, what you get, how to apply, and what happens next

Older Americans Act meals give Californians 60 and older, and their spouses, meals in a group setting or delivered at home, in all 58 counties, through 33 Area Agencies on Aging. There is no income test; contributions are voluntary and no one is refused a meal for not paying. Home delivery is for people 60+ who have trouble leaving home or shopping and cooking; you start by calling the county Area Agency on Aging.

What Senior Nutrition Program is, in one paragraph

The Senior Nutrition Program, called the Older Californians Nutrition Program in California, is the Older Americans Act meal program. It has two parts: congregate meals, served in a group setting such as a senior center, and home-delivered meals, often called Meals on Wheels. The California Department of Aging runs it through 33 Area Agencies on Aging in all 58 counties. There is no income test. Participants are asked for a voluntary contribution, and no eligible person is refused a meal for not giving one. Home delivery comes with a wellness check from the person bringing the meal.

At least 5 meals a week
home-delivered meals, with wellness checks, for people 60+ with limited ability to leave home or cook; no payment required (California Department of Aging, rule:hdm_five)

Who may qualify

The question is age, then which meal program.

Congregate meals: people 60 or older (rule:age_60), their spouses at any age (rule:spouse), and people with disabilities who live at a site where meals are served (rule:disabled_at_site).

Home-delivered meals: people 60 or older who have limited ability to leave home without help, or to shop for and prepare meals (rule:hdm_eligibility); a spouse of a participant; a person with a disability who lives with a participant (rule:disabled_at_home). Each Area Agency on Aging may add criteria.

Income: no income limit is stated, and no one is refused a meal for not contributing (rule:no_income_test).

How to apply, and what happens after

Contact the Area Agency on Aging for your county (rule:apply_aaa). Find it on the CDA county page or by calling 800-510-2020 (rule:find_aaa). Outside California, the Eldercare Locator answers at 1-800-677-1116 (rule:eldercare_locator).
