Adrian Bejan observed that flow systems evolve toward configurations that provide greater access for currents. Currents include heat, fluid, people, and goods. The observation started from engineering problems in heat transfer.

The 2012 book Design in Nature applied it to technology and social organization. The 2016 book The Physics of Life framed evolution as physics.
